# Day 231: Tip-overs

> A baby who kneels at the dresser will soon pull up on it. CPSC counted 234 tip-over deaths in 22 years, 199 of them children. Anchoring one piece is an afternoon's work, and today is the afternoon.

This guide is general education that summarizes published research and guidance from groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics, the CDC, and the WHO. It isn’t medical advice, and every child develops on their own timeline. Your pediatrician knows your child; if something feels wrong, call them. In an emergency, call 911.

Thirty-one weeks ends today. The week's last job is the heaviest furniture in the house.

## Heart

Anchor bookcases, dressers, and TV stands to the wall ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/safety-prevention/at-home/Pages/Home-Safety-Heres-How.aspx)). CPSC counted 234 deaths from dresser and other clothing-storage tip-overs from 2000 to April 2022, 199 of them children ([CPSC](https://www.cpsc.gov/Newsroom/News-Releases/2023/CPSC-Adopts-Final-Consumer-Product-Safety-Standard-to-Prevent-Tip-overs-of-Dressers-and-Other-Clothing-Storage-Units)). A dresser is exactly what a baby grabs: the pulls are handholds, an open drawer is a step. Under the STURDY Act, dressers made since September 2023 must pass tougher stability tests, but CPSC still advises anchoring them ([CPSC](https://www.cpsc.gov/Newsroom/News-Releases/2023/CPSC-Adopts-Final-Consumer-Product-Safety-Standard-to-Prevent-Tip-overs-of-Dressers-and-Other-Clothing-Storage-Units)). The one that was yours as a child never had to pass anything.

## Head

Why now. Pulling up to stand and walking while holding on to furniture are 12-month milestones ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/act-early/milestones/1-year.html)), and the AAP describes pulling up as often arriving before a baby knows how to get back down ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/Pages/Movement-8-to-12-Months.aspx)). The pull comes first, the balance later, and the furniture takes the weight in between. Crawling, for the babies who do it, is usually mastered between 7 and 10 months ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/Pages/Movement-8-to-12-Months.aspx)); it isn't on any CDC checklist ([Kretch et al., 2022](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35876833/)), and 4.3% of the healthy children in the WHO's study never crawled on hands and knees at all ([WHO Multicentre Growth Reference Study Group, 2006](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16817682/)). A scooter reaches the dresser just as surely, and the job is to babyproof ahead of the next skill.

## Body

The same afternoon covers the crib: set the mattress at its lowest position before your baby learns to stand, and keep cords well away from it ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/safety-prevention/at-home/Pages/Make-Babys-Room-Safe.aspx)). While you're on the floor, look at everything else at kneeling height: the TV on a stand that could tip, the lamp cord ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/safety-prevention/at-home/Pages/Home-Safety-Heres-How.aspx)). Cordless window coverings are the only way to remove the strangulation risk from blind cords ([CPSC](https://www.cpsc.gov/gocordless)).

## Try today

### The anchor afternoon

- **Time:** 20 to 30 minutes, during a nap or with your partner on the floor with the baby

1. Pick the one piece your baby plays nearest: the nursery dresser or the living-room bookcase.
2. Use the anti-tip strap or bracket that came with it, or one from the hardware store, and fix it to the wall and to the back of the piece, following the kit's instructions.
3. Push the top of the piece toward you, hard. It shouldn't move.
4. Move anything heavy, the TV included, off the top of a dresser and onto a low stand that is anchored too ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/safety-prevention/at-home/Pages/Home-Safety-Heres-How.aspx)).
5. Write the next piece on the fridge list for the weekend.

**Make it work:** The fix is the same for every dresser, old or new; the STURDY standard applies only to those made since September 2023 ([CPSC](https://www.cpsc.gov/Newsroom/News-Releases/2023/CPSC-Adopts-Final-Consumer-Product-Safety-Standard-to-Prevent-Tip-overs-of-Dressers-and-Other-Clothing-Storage-Units)).

## Watch for

- **Normal:** a baby who pulls to kneeling at the couch edge, then plops back down with a surprised face; getting back down comes after getting up ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/Pages/Movement-8-to-12-Months.aspx)). **Call your pediatrician right away** for any head injury in a baby under 1, even if they seem fine ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/tips-tools/symptom-checker/Pages/symptomviewer.aspx?symptom=Head+Injury)).
- **Normal:** a sideways topple from sitting onto the rug, a few tears, and a return to the toy; sitting without support is a 9-month skill still being practiced ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/act-early/milestones/9-months.html)). **Go to the ER now** if, after a head injury, your baby vomits 2 or more times, cries and won't stop, or is awake but not alert ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/tips-tools/symptom-checker/Pages/symptomviewer.aspx?symptom=Head+Injury)).
- **Normal:** a baby who favors a drawer pull over any toy you own ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/Pages/Cognitive-Development-8-to-12-Months.aspx)). **Call 911** if your baby has a seizure, or was knocked out for more than a minute, after a head injury ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/tips-tools/symptom-checker/Pages/symptomviewer.aspx?symptom=Head+Injury)).

## For you

The partner's job, if that's the deal. The AAP urges pediatricians to support fathers' involvement ([Yogman & Garfield, 2016](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27296867/)), and this is involvement with a screwdriver: the kit from the baby shower, the strap, the hard push on the top. If you're the handy one, trade something else away this afternoon and let the other adult take the floor and the baby. Either way, say out loud which pieces are done. CPSC's count is 199 children in 22 years ([CPSC](https://www.cpsc.gov/Newsroom/News-Releases/2023/CPSC-Adopts-Final-Consumer-Product-Safety-Standard-to-Prevent-Tip-overs-of-Dressers-and-Other-Clothing-Storage-Units)); one anchored dresser a weekend is how a house gets off that list.

If you're the partner: this one is yours by default unless you've agreed otherwise. Finish before the nap ends, and name the next piece.
