# Day 51: Standing all day

> If your job keeps you on your feet, today you ask for fifteen minutes an hour. Plus the small habits that lower swelling and bladder infections.

This guide is general education that summarizes published research and guidance from groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics, the CDC, and the WHO. It isn’t medical advice, and every child develops on their own timeline. Your pediatrician knows your child; if something feels wrong, call them. In an emergency, call 911.

Seven weeks and two days. Yesterday was what you lift. Today is how long you stand, and a specific thing to ask for.

## Your baby

Around 10mm from head to bottom, about the size of a grape ([NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/best-start-in-life/pregnancy/week-by-week-guide-to-pregnancy/1st-trimester/week-7/)). The face and the eyelids are developing this week, along with the brain ([NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/best-start-in-life/pregnancy/week-by-week-guide-to-pregnancy/1st-trimester/week-7/)), and the arm buds are lengthening toward hands ([NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/best-start-in-life/pregnancy/week-by-week-guide-to-pregnancy/1st-trimester/week-7/)).

## Your body

For prolonged standing, MedlinePlus's advice is concrete: ask your employer for 15 minutes of sitting for every hour of standing ([MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000609.htm)). Two smaller things from the same page: compression stockings may reduce leg swelling, and routine bathroom breaks may lower the risk of a urinary tract infection ([MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000609.htm)).

The bathroom breaks are not optional anyway. Frequent urination is common in early pregnancy because hCG, produced in the first few weeks, increases blood flow to the pelvic region ([NICHD](https://www.nichd.nih.gov/health/topics/pregnancy/conditioninfo/signs)). For legs that puff by the end of a shift, MedlinePlus suggests limiting salty foods and says support pantyhose or compression stockings may help ([MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000583.htm)). Tiredness and cramping are on the NHS's list for this week ([NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/best-start-in-life/pregnancy/week-by-week-guide-to-pregnancy/1st-trimester/week-7/)); a shift on your feet makes both louder.

## Try today

### The fifteen-minute sit

- **Time:** 10 minutes to plan, then one shift

1. Walk through a normal shift in your head, hour by hour, and write where a seat is within reach in each one: the back room, a stool behind the counter, the car at break.
2. Ask for 15 minutes of sitting for every hour of standing ([MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000609.htm)). You don't need to say why; "my doctor's advice" is enough, and it's true.
3. Pair each sit with a bathroom trip; routine breaks may lower the risk of a UTI ([MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000609.htm)).
4. Add compression stockings to the first-visit questions ([MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000609.htm)).

**Make it work:** Feet up on something while you sit; the Office on Women's Health's line for swelling is to rest with your feet raised ([OWH](https://womenshealth.gov/pregnancy/youre-pregnant-now-what/body-changes-and-discomforts)).

## Watch for

- **Normal:** peeing more often ([NICHD](https://www.nichd.nih.gov/health/topics/pregnancy/conditioninfo/signs)). **Call your provider** for pain when urinating, or a change in the odor or color of your urine, which may signal a bladder infection ([MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000583.htm)).
- **Normal:** more discharge than before. **Call your provider** if it has a foul odor, a greenish color, itching, or pain; vaginal infections matter in pregnancy because they may cause preterm labor ([MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000583.htm)).
- **Normal:** ankles that swell a little after hours standing ([MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000583.htm)). **Call your provider** for leg swelling with headaches or high blood pressure, which can signal preeclampsia ([MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000583.htm)), and for extreme swelling of your hands or face, which is on the CDC's urgent list ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/hearher/maternal-warning-signs/index.html)).

## For you

If your day is at a desk instead, the hands are the thing. Carpal tunnel symptoms in pregnancy are often from extra fluid and usually improve after birth; MedlinePlus suggests adjusting your chair height, taking stretch breaks, and using a wrist brace ([MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000609.htm)). A brace worn at night can help with the numbness that's worst on waking ([MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000580.htm)).

If you're the partner: a chair at the door when she gets home, and nothing to do for the first fifteen minutes. That's the whole job tonight.
