# Day 52: Heat

> Pregnancy makes hot days harder: your body is cooling two people. Today you write a three-line heat plan and take it to your provider.

- Series: Your second month of pregnancy, day by day (https://chorevia.com/learn/pregnancy-month-2), day 52 of 280, 7 weeks + 3 days

This guide is general education that summarizes published research and guidance from groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics, the CDC, and the WHO. It isn’t medical advice, and every child develops on their own timeline. Your pediatrician knows your child; if something feels wrong, call them. In an emergency, call 911.

Seven weeks and three days. Whether it's hot where you are today or not, there will be a hot day before this pregnancy is over. Today you plan for it while it's easy.

## Your baby

Around 10mm from head to bottom, about the size of a grape ([NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/best-start-in-life/pregnancy/week-by-week-guide-to-pregnancy/1st-trimester/week-7/)). The brain is developing this week, with the face and eyelids ([NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/best-start-in-life/pregnancy/week-by-week-guide-to-pregnancy/1st-trimester/week-7/)). Your body is doing the temperature control for both of you, which is the point of today.

## Your body

The CDC's page is plain: pregnancy can make a person more likely to get sick when it is very hot ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/risk-factors/heat-and-pregnancy.html)). Heat exhaustion, heat stroke, or other heat illness can come on sooner in pregnancy because the body must work harder to cool both the pregnant person and the developing baby ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/risk-factors/heat-and-pregnancy.html)). Pregnancy also raises the risk of dehydration, which reduces the body's ability to cool itself through sweat ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/risk-factors/heat-and-pregnancy.html)).

There is a second reason to care. In very hot environments or during strenuous activity, core body temperature may rise, and in some cases a higher internal temperature and fever during pregnancy have been linked to birth defects and other complications ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/risk-factors/heat-and-pregnancy.html)). The CDC's instruction is to create a heat action plan with your doctor ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/risk-factors/heat-and-pregnancy.html)). The thirst you may already feel comes from the rising blood volume ([NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/best-start-in-life/pregnancy/week-by-week-guide-to-pregnancy/1st-trimester/week-7/)); heat adds to it.

## Try today

### The heat plan

- **Time:** 10 minutes

1. Line one, fluids: your eight medium glasses ([NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/best-start-in-life/pregnancy/week-by-week-guide-to-pregnancy/1st-trimester/week-7/)), and where the bottle lives on a hot day. Dehydration is the risk the CDC names first ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/risk-factors/heat-and-pregnancy.html)).
2. Line two, the cool place: the coolest room or building you can get to from home and from work, written down so you don't have to think of it when you're already hot.
3. Line three, effort: the CDC's words are "Do not engage in very strenuous activities and get plenty of rest" ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/risk-factors/heat-and-pregnancy.html)). Name the jobs that stop on hot days, and who takes them.
4. Add a note to check the CDC HeatRisk Dashboard, which gives a local forecast by zip code ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/risk-factors/heat-and-pregnancy.html)).
5. Take the page to your provider; the CDC says to create the plan with your doctor ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/risk-factors/heat-and-pregnancy.html)).

## Watch for

- **Normal:** feeling the heat sooner than the people around you ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/risk-factors/heat-and-pregnancy.html)). **Call 911** if you or someone with you has symptoms of heat-related illness; the CDC says to seek medical care immediately ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/risk-factors/heat-and-pregnancy.html)).
- **Normal:** sweating heavily on a hot day. **Call your provider** to ask how to replace salt and minerals safely; heavy sweating can deplete them ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/risk-factors/heat-and-pregnancy.html)).
- **Normal:** thirst ([NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/best-start-in-life/pregnancy/week-by-week-guide-to-pregnancy/1st-trimester/week-7/)). **Call your provider today** for a fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/hearher/maternal-warning-signs/index.html)); fever and a high internal temperature are what the CDC's heat page links, in some cases, to birth defects ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/risk-factors/heat-and-pregnancy.html)).

## For you

Saunas, hot tubs, hot yoga: the CDC's heat page doesn't rule on them one by one, and neither will we. What it does say is that core body temperature may rise in very hot environments or during strenuous activity ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/risk-factors/heat-and-pregnancy.html)). Put the ones you'd miss on the list for your provider and ask, rather than guessing either way.

If you're the partner: the strenuous outdoor jobs on a hot day are yours now, the lawn and the car and the carrying. And the glass of water, before she asks.
