# Day 165: Gums

> What helps sore gums is cheap and already in your house: a clean finger, a firm rubber teether, a cold damp washcloth. What to skip is on the FDA's list, and some of it is sold as a gift.

This guide is general education that summarizes published research and guidance from groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics, the CDC, and the WHO. It isn’t medical advice, and every child develops on their own timeline. Your pediatrician knows your child; if something feels wrong, call them. In an emergency, call 911.

Yesterday was about what teething isn't. Today is about the baby who is genuinely sore, and what actually helps.

## Heart

Three things help, and none of them cost much: rub the gums with a clean finger, offer a firm rubber teether that isn't liquid-filled, or let your baby chew a cold, damp washcloth. Skip teethers frozen rock-hard ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/teething-tooth-care/Pages/Teething-Pain.aspx)), and never tie anything around your baby's neck ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/teething-tooth-care/Pages/Teething-4-to-7-Months.aspx)). The guide is honest about the evidence: how well these simple remedies work hasn't been well studied, but they carry little risk ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/teething-tooth-care/Pages/Teething-Pain.aspx); [FDA](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/safely-soothing-teething-pain-infants-and-children)). That is a fair trade for a pressure on the gums that a baby plainly likes.

## Head

On a rough night, ask your pediatrician about a weight-based dose of acetaminophen; ibuprofen is only for babies over 6 months ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/teething-tooth-care/Pages/Babys-First-Tooth-Facts-Parents-Should-Know.aspx)). Get the dose in milliliters for your baby's weight, not a guess from the box ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/teething-tooth-care/Pages/Babys-First-Tooth-Facts-Parents-Should-Know.aspx)). The list of what to avoid is firmer than the list of what helps: benzocaine gels, which can cause a dangerous blood condition called methemoglobinemia; lidocaine; homeopathic teething tablets; and teething necklaces or bracelets, which have caused deaths ([FDA](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/safely-soothing-teething-pain-infants-and-children); [AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/teething-tooth-care/Pages/Teething-Pain.aspx)). The FDA warned in 2018 that teething jewelry has caused deaths and serious injuries from strangulation and choking, and there's no evidence it relieves pain; the AAP doesn't recommend any jewelry for babies ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/teething-tooth-care/Pages/Amber-Teething-Necklaces.aspx)).

## Body

Teething gear is also mouthing gear, and everything your baby chews goes by the mouth rules: most children who die from choking are under 5, two-thirds of them babies under 1, so keep small objects out of reach ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/health-issues/injuries-emergencies/Pages/Choking-Prevention.aspx)). A teether is one piece, too big to swallow, and checked for cracks each time it comes out of the wash.

## Try today

### Teething comfort, three ways

- **Time:** As needed
- **From the guide:** [Teething comfort, three ways](https://chorevia.com/learn/5-months#teething-comfort-three-ways)

1. Wash your hands and rub your baby's gums gently with a fingertip ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/teething-tooth-care/Pages/Teething-Pain.aspx)).
2. Offer a firm rubber teether that isn't liquid-filled ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/teething-tooth-care/Pages/Teething-Pain.aspx)).
3. Twist a damp washcloth, chill it in the fridge, and let your baby gnaw on it while you hold the other end.

**Make it work:** Don't freeze teethers rock-hard, and never tie anything around your baby's neck ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/teething-tooth-care/Pages/Teething-4-to-7-Months.aspx)).

## Watch for

- **Normal:** wanting to chew everything, including your knuckle, for most of the day ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/teething-tooth-care/Pages/Babys-First-Tooth-Facts-Parents-Should-Know.aspx)). **Call 911** if your baby is choking: a weak or no cough, no sound, can't cry, or pale or blue skin; start back blows and chest thrusts ([Red Cross](https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/resources/learn-first-aid/infant-choking)).
- **Normal:** a slight temperature rise in the days around a tooth, which is not a fever ([Massignan et al., 2016](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26908659/)). **Call your pediatrician right away** if your baby has cried nonstop for more than 2 hours ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/tips-tools/symptom-checker/Pages/symptomviewer.aspx?symptom=Crying+Child+-+3+Months+and+Older)).
- **Normal:** a bib soaked by lunch. **Call 911** if your baby is not moving or is very weak, or can't be woken up ([AAP](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/tips-tools/symptom-checker/Pages/symptomviewer.aspx?symptom=Fever)).

## For you

Skip the products aisle. Everything on the FDA's avoid list is sold within a few feet of the diapers, in packaging that looks kind, and some of it will arrive as a gift ([FDA](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/safely-soothing-teething-pain-infants-and-children)). You already own the things that help. Spend the money on something for you instead, flowers or a coffee you drink hot, and consider that a decision you made from the evidence, because it was.

If a necklace arrives, take it off before the first photo and say why once, warmly: "The FDA says these can strangle babies, so we don't use them, but thank you." You won't need to say it twice.

If you're the partner: you handle the relatives on this one. It's easier to hear from you.
