A picture of a sun and three empty slots. Put the letter that says “sss” first, then “u,” then “nnn.” The tiles wait in order, then get mixed up, then extra letters join in, then a four-letter word.

Big and little, full and empty, hot and cold. Find the picture that shows the opposite: from two, then three; then say the opposite out loud before the choices appear, and find it among four.

Tap each thing and it goes on a ten-frame as it’s counted: “ten… and one more is eleven.” Eleven, twelve, then twenty; then some are counted already, and the child counts on from ten, then from thirteen.

Play game 14: Number Match

A card of dots and three numbers: which one says how many? One to five as on a die, six to ten scattered, then eleven to twenty on ten-frames, then any of them.

“Three apples, and two more. How many now?” The sum is written as 3 + 2 = ? and the child taps the answer; right, and they’re all counted together. Within five, then ten; then the first group hides under a cloth with its number, and the child counts on from it.

Play game 16: Fly Away

Five birds on the wire. Two fly away. How many are left? The number sentence is written big, and the birds that flew are counted back. Within five, then ten, then say the answer before they go.

Play game 17: Bigger Number

Two numbers, no pictures: which is bigger? One to five with dots to check, one to ten, then no dots; then put three numbers in order from smallest to biggest.

Play game 18: Number Line

Stepping stones numbered one to ten, with a number missing: tap the one that fills the gap. Then two missing, then one to twenty, then the frog hops forward two more.

Play game 19: Fair Shares

Share the cookies so every friend gets the same, one cookie at a time. Four for two friends, six for two, six for three, then seven for three, with one left over for the cookie jar.

Play game 20: Tangram Pictures

Make a house, a boat, a fish, and a cat from shape pieces: two triangles, a square, a long piece. Each piece's outline is drawn first, then just the picture's outline, then a piece has to be turned.

Play game 21: Pattern Maker

Finish red, blue, red, blue… then ABB and ABC patterns, build the next tower of a growing pattern, and make your own for Bear to copy. The narrator reads the rule it finds.

Play game 22: How Long?

How many blocks long is the snake? Lay blocks end to end and count, then guess first and measure, then measure two things and say which is longer.

Play game 23: Balance It

A balance scale: tap the heavier side, guess before you weigh, add blocks until it's level, then work out the heaviest of three things with two weighings.

Play game 24: Mirror Half

Finish the other half of a butterfly and a house: each piece goes to the same spot on the other side of the line. Three pieces, then six, then draw a picture that mirrors itself.

Play game 25: Left and Right

Put the cup on the left of the table, then tap Bear's left paw when he faces away and when he turns round, then follow two steps in order: the cup on the left, then the ball on the right.

Play game 26: Robot Path

Lay out arrow cards to send the robot to the star, then press Go and watch it step card by card. Two steps straight on, then a turn, then five steps round a wall, then the fewest cards that work.

Play game 27: Which Key?

Keys and locks. Find the key whose end matches the keyhole: from three, then four; then the key must match in shape and color too; then a chest with two locks, and a toy inside.

Play game 28: Guess My Rule

Bear sorts some things into a box: red ones in, blue ones out. Work out the rule and sort the next ones. By color, then shape, then size, then “red circles go in”, and the rule is written once it’s found.

Play game 29: Picture Sudoku

Every row and every column needs each animal once. Tap an empty square, then the animal that belongs there: a 3 by 3 with one empty square, then three, then four; then a 4 by 4.

Play game 30: Card Pairs

Concentration with more cards: turn over two at a time to find the pairs. Eight cards, then twelve, then sixteen; then a card with a letter pairs with a picture that starts with it.

Play game 31: Key Maze

Walk the puppy to the key, then to the door: the door stays locked until the key is picked up. A short path with the key on it, then the key down a side path, then two keys for two doors in the right order.

Play game 32: Spot the Difference

Two pictures that almost match: tap what's different in either one, and a ring marks it in both. Two big differences, then four small ones, then say what changed before the narrator does.

Play game 33: Twenty Questions

Bear is thinking of one of the pictures. Tap a question, hear yes or no, and watch the ruled-out pictures fade until one is left. Three things, then eight; last, the child thinks of one and the grown-up asks.

Play game 34: Magnet Hunt

Which things will the magnet pick up? Say your guess, tap yes or no, then put the magnet on it and see. Then sort eight things by guess first and test them, and say what the stuck ones have in common.

Play game 35: Grow a Plant

Give a seed water and sun and watch it grow day by day. Then a fair test: one pot gets no water, then no light. Say what will happen, tap next day, and see. Last, put the week in order: seed, sprout, bud, flower.

Play game 36: Weather Watch

Look at the sky and pick the clothes for sun, rain, and snow; read hot or cold off the thermometer; then say what the sun or the rain will do to the puddle, the snowman, and the laundry, and watch it happen.

Play game 37: Whose Tracks?

Footprints in the snow: match the big paw print to the bear from two, then from three; follow a trail to the cave, the pond, or the tree; then work out who was here first from whose tracks are on top.

Play game 38: Light and Shadow

Say which way the shadow will fall, then switch on the flashlight; drag it along and watch the shadow move; move it closer to make the shadow bigger; then match a turned shadow to the thing that made it.

Play game 39: Rhythm Echo

Bear plays a rhythm on the drum and the child plays it back: three beats, then four and five with a rest (a hollow dot, a beat of quiet), then reads the dots and plays it before Bear does.

Play game 40: High and Low

Is the note high, like a bird, or low, like a bear? Tap the one it sounds like; then listen to a little tune on three keys and play it back: two notes, three, then four.

Play game 41: Bear Says Two Things

Simon Says with two steps. Bear says hop, then clap: do it in the room, then tap what Bear said, in order. One move, then two, then calls without “Bear says”, when the statue is the one to tap.

Play game 42: Statue Dance

Dance while the music plays; when it stops, freeze like a statue. Then freeze like the picture: a tree, a star, a ball, a flamingo. Then hold the pose while the narrator counts to five.

Play game 43: How Do They Feel?

A face and a moment: how do they feel? Happy, sad, mad, scared with Bear; proud, worried, surprised with Fox; then two feelings at once, and what could help.

Play game 44: Your Turn, Bear’s Turn

A tiny board game with Bear: tap the die to roll and hop toward the picnic, then wait while Bear takes his turn. Three spaces, then a longer board with go-back spaces, and everyone gets to the picnic in the end.

Two friends want the same swing. Pick a fair idea and see what happens: take turns, share, ask a grown-up, say sorry, invite them. An unfair idea is tried kindly, then another. Then say your idea first, and think of one of your own.

Lunch for four friends: count out four plates, then work through the list (plates, cups, forks) one for each friend, then spot what's missing when one more friend arrives.
