If the baby comes early

Last reviewed · 3 min read · 5 sources · Plain-text version

Thirty-four weeks and two days. Most babies wait for full term, but some don't. Today you write a three-line plan for an early arrival, and then put it away.

Thirty-four weeks and two days. Today's note is about something most families won't face: a baby arriving weeks early. It's here once, plainly, so that if it happens, you already have a plan. Then you can put it away.

Your baby

A single cantaloupe melon on a plain pale wooden table, soft window light.

Around now your baby is around 45cm long from head to heel, about the size of a cantaloupe melon (NHS). From 34 through 36 weeks, a baby born early is called "late preterm," and more than 70% of preterm babies are born in that range (NICHD). Late-preterm babies still face more health risks than babies born at full term, because the brain, lungs, and liver are still developing in the final weeks (NICHD). That's why, without a medical reason to deliver earlier, the advice is to wait until at least 39 weeks (NICHD).

Your body

Sleeping on your side is recommended now; it helps blood flow to the placenta and eases backache (NHS). Preterm labor is labor between 20 and 36 weeks (NICHD). Some contractions through the day are normal; six or more in an hour are not (NICHD). If you think you might be in preterm labor, NICHD's advice is to call your doctor or go to the hospital to be checked (NICHD).

Try today

  1. The early-arrival plan

    Time: 10 minutes

    1. On a card, write line one, who to call: your provider's number, the hospital's labor and delivery number, and the person who'd look after any other children or pets.

    2. Line two, what to grab: phone, charger, ID and insurance card, your prenatal notes. The rest of the bag can follow.

    3. Line three: "From the baby's first day, start the first month notes." They follow your baby day by day, whenever that day comes.

    4. Tuck the card in your wallet or the half-packed bag, and tell your partner where it is.

    Make it work:

The plan is for the first hour, not the first week. Three lines is enough; the hospital team takes it from there.

Watch for

  • Normal

more discharge than earlier in pregnancy.

    Call your provider

or go to the hospital for a change in discharge, such as leaking fluid or bleeding, which NICHD lists among the signs of preterm labor (NICHD).

  • Normal

a heavy, low feeling as your baby settles down.

    Call your provider

for pressure in your pelvis that comes with a low, dull backache (NICHD).

  • Normal

    a passing twinge.

    Call your provider

for cramps like period cramps, or belly cramps with or without diarrhea (NICHD).

For you

If your baby does come early, some things will look different. One example: the AAP says preterm babies should be checked in the hospital to make sure they can sit safely semi-reclined in a car seat before going home (AAP). The team will walk you through each step.

If reading this today stirred up worry that won't settle, that's worth saying out loud. The NHS's advice this week is to talk to your midwife or doctor if you're feeling anxious or low (NHS).
