Day 126 of 300 · Week 17
Eyes and spirals
Last reviewed · 3 min read · 8 sources · Plain-text version
At 4 months babies see colors and shades better and may love circles and spirals, which is one reason faces win. Mirror time today, and the eye signs worth a call.

Your face has competition this month: anything round that turns. Faces still win.
Heart
At 4 months, babies see colors and shades better and may love circles and spirals, one reason faces are so appealing. They also spot nearby objects and often reach for them (AAP). Wandering or crossing eyes should be going away by 2 to 3 months (AAP), so an eye that still turns in or out all the time is worth a question, not a wait.
Head
A mirror is the toy that fits. The AAP lists an unbreakable mirror among toys for 4-month-olds (AAP), and liking to look at themselves in a mirror is a 6-month milestone (CDC). Nobody has tested mirror play as an activity; the point is the faces. Your baby finds the one in the glass, then finds yours beside it, and gets two of the thing they like best.
Body
Keep the screens off, even the ones with faces on them. CDC limits screen time to video calls with loved ones before age 2 (CDC); the AAP says babies under 18 months learn best from real-world interactions (Munzer, AAP) and calls video chat with faraway family fine (Hill, AAP). A mirror is real-world: the face in it moves when the baby does.

Mirror smiles
Time: 2 to 3 minutes · Mirror smiles in the guide
Hold your baby facing an unbreakable mirror, or prop one beside them during tummy time.
Point and say, "There's [name]! There's me!"
Make faces and watch them watch you.
Lean out of the frame and back in, slowly, so the face in the glass comes and goes.
Make it work:Unbreakable only, and nothing propped where it can fall on them. Stop when they look away.
Watch for
- Normal: long stares at a striped shirt, a ceiling fan, a spiral on a cup (AAP). Ask about an eye exam if an eye still crosses or wanders, or turns in or out all the time (AAP).
- Normal: losing interest in the mirror after a minute or two. Go to the ER now if your baby has a bulging soft spot, is hard to wake, or isn't alert when awake (AAP).
- Call 911 for purple or blood-colored spots on the skin with a fever (AAP).
For you

Your vision changes stay urgent. Four months out is still inside the year the CDC counts: changes in vision, a headache that won't go away or gets worse, dizziness or fainting, and extreme swelling of your hands or face mean seek care immediately, and tell any provider you were pregnant within the last year (CDC). Blurry from tiredness and blurry from something else can feel the same from the inside. The rule is to let someone with a blood pressure cuff decide.
If you're the partner: if she says her eyes are doing something strange, that's a drive to care, not a nap.

This guide is general education that summarizes published research and guidance from groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics, the CDC, and the WHO. It isn’t medical advice, and every child develops on their own timeline. Your pediatrician knows your child; if something feels wrong, call them. In an emergency, call 911.
